Oppo Ulike 2 comes with a 5 MP front camera to replace the mirror for ladies’ makeup on the go

The Oppo Ulike 2 (model number U705T) isn’t your run of the mill device that got a new paint job and a few ‘girly’ gimmicks and has thus been rebadged as a full-on ‘women’s phone’, such as the HTC Rhyme or upcoming Samsung La Fleur handsets. No, this is something a little bit more thought through. And it’s been inspired by a Chanel lipstick, apparently.

That, of course, doesn’t mean that it will be the first ever women-focused smartphone to actually be successful, mind you. But it may have a bigger chance at that than its predecessors from the competition.

The Oppo Ulike 2 has a 5 MP front-facing camera. That fact alone is rather intriguing, since this is the first smartphone in the world to come with such high-res optics in its secondary snapper. In fact, most if not all of today’s top of the line flagship devices don’t go much above 2 MP for their front-facing shooter, so the Ulike 2 is ahead by a wide margin.

That camera is in there for two reasons. First, to enable the women who’ll buy the device to use it as a mirror, when need arises for a quick make-up session or do-over on the go. Using the front-facing camera’s preview mode, and watching the resulting image on the big, 4.5-inch touchscreen, will probably replace a pocket/purse mirror without any trouble. The 5 MP unit should make the images look crisp enough for spotting even the most minute details.

Furthermore, the front-facing camera is perfect for self-portraits, Oppo claims. The camera app comes with five different ‘effects’ that can be applied, in real-time, to the viewfinder, among them being “dermabrasion, whitening, face-lift, eye enhancement” – so that self-portrait will turn out just perfect. The company also claims that its new camera app is faster than third party offerings which come with filters too.

Of course, video calls also benefit from the good front-facing camera, but that’s probably not going to be the main selling point here (who does video calls on mobile anyway?).

The Oppo Ulike 2 will be incredibly compact for a smartphone bearing a 4.5-inch touchscreen, thanks in no small part to its ridiculously small screen bezel – just 2.2 mm. This will help with one-handed operation, which is essential for the ‘mirror’ use case to actually work in practice. The phone’s dimensions are 127×63.7×8.95 mm.

Oppo has confirmed to Chinese media that it is working on this device. It hasn’t announced all its specs, but the rumors making rounds in China speak about a 4.5-inch 540×960 touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera, a yet-unknown dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of built-in storage space, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. We’ll keep you posted.

Acer Liquid Glow Android 4.0 Smartphone Announced

Acer has just announced a new Android smartphone that it will show off at Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona next week, the Acer Liquid Glow.

There’s no detailed spec sheet at present for the first Liquid handset since the Liquid Express was announced back in November, so we can’t tell you what processor will be powering the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich action or what resolution the 3.7-inch display is.

What we do know is it has got a 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash, panoramic image capture and touch focus, and NFC skills for Android Beam fun. We also know it will be coming in a range of “trendy colours” such as “Sakura Pink”, “Alpine White”, and “Cat’s-eye Black” and that the display will be matched to the chassis “making each smartphone a unique fashion statement”.

We already got wind of another Acer Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone that will be on show at the Spanish expo when the company revealed that its as-of-yet-unannounced Acer CloudMobile had won the iF design award 2012, in recognition of outstanding achievement in design.

Looking like being a big brother to the Liquid Glow, the CloudMobile is said to be packing a 4.3-inch HD display, Dolby sound, and is less than 10mm thick.

Pocket-lint will be out in Barcelona in full force to bring you all the MWC news from Sunday onwards so be sure to check the site for any more Acer announcements as well as all the other news and views from the world’s largest exhibition for the mobile industry.

The Acer Liquid Glow will hit the shops in summer 2012. Price details have still to be confirmed.

Update: We’ve now got the full low-down on the Acer Liquid Glow and know that it has a Qualcomm 7227A 1GHz processor, a WVGA display, 1GB of storage and 512MB of RAM. It measures 117 x 58.5 x 11.5 mm and weighs 125g.

Sony Tablet S, Tablet P getting Android 4.0 update

Sony recently posted some good news for Tablet S and Tablet P owners, confirming that the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update will indeed be rolling out to both devices. The news was posted in Sony UK’s community forums, but the company hasn’t confirmed yet when this update will arrive.

Both devices feature unique form factors with the Tablet S being a 10-inch device that resembles a folded back magazine while the Tablet P sports a smaller more pocketable clam shell design. Both devices come with a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, Android 3.2 Honeycomb.

We’ve heard real minuscule nigh the two devices since actuation, but it’s discriminating to see that Sony is works activity both slates and that its bespoken programme hasn’t reserved a platform advance suchlike it has for Samsung’s Beetleweed S and Coltsfoot Tab.

Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab will not be getting Android 4.0

Samsung has revealed that its Galaxy S smartphone and Galaxy Tab 7-inch tablet will not be getting the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. The company explained that the devices could not be updated due to hardware limitations that would not be able to run the new Android platform alongside Samsung’s custom TouchWiz user interface.

The explanation, however, seems inconsistent since the Android 4.0 update is already being rolled out to Samsung’s Nexus S, which features similar internal hardware. The Galaxy S packs the same 1GHz Hummingbird processor and enough memory for ICS.

Hence, what’s really preventing the ICS update is Samsung’s custom TouchWiz interface and a host of other “experience enhancing” software that already take up a lot of resources. Although the hardware is the same, the Nexus S, unlike the Galaxy S, does not need to deliver TouchWiz, carrier services, video calling software, and mobile TV.
