Toshiba Satellite U840 goes official for Australia, still waiting on its US passport

While Toshiba’s stateside reps had us convinced its 14-inch Ultrabook wouldn’t see the light of day until sometime in June, that message of withholding apparently didn’t make it Down Under. Outed by its Australian arm today, that would-be Portege is actually the company’s Satellite U840.

We already knew the electronics giant had intended on shuffling this Windows 7 machine out under that brand umbrella back at CES, but now we have a $1,500 AUD (about $1,608 USD) price tag to go with a list of confirmed specs. Officially on deck for this aluminum-bodied laptop are an Intel Core i5-2467M processor and HD Graphics 3000 GPU, 720p-capable 1366 x 768 LED display, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 320GB of storage, in addition to ports for HDMI, mic, headphone and USB (1x USB 3.0 and 2x USB 2.0).

We still don’t know much about the capacity of the six cell battery powering this svelte notebook entry or a concrete landing date for that matter. But from the looks of this Aussie product page, that release is creeping mighty close.

Toshiba Japan unveils USB 3.0 TransMemory-EX flash drive

If you’re in the market for a new USB 3.0 flash drive, Toshiba may have something for you in the form of the TransMemory-EX, a new USB 3.0 developed by the Japanese company with read and write speeds of up to 220MB/s and 94MB/s respectively, or so Toshiba claims. They will be backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports, although that would result in slower read and write speeds of 34MB/s and 30MB/s respectively.

What makes these particular bit drives antithetical from the rivalry is its superpower activity which Toshiba claims is the lowest in the manufacture, thanks to the low superpower ASIC mortal and dedicated piping speeding NAND twinkling remembering.

The Toshiba TransMemory-EX supports Windows ReadyBoost and measures 68.8x21x10.5mm and leave weigh 14g. They are predicted to signal transport in Feb though no show if they will be making their way stateside or internationally, and give reportedly expenditure $102 for the 32GB copy and $150 for the 64GB shape.

Toshiba 6-inch tablet display offers 498ppi print-quality

Toshiba has revealed its latest high-resolution display, a 6.1-inch panel that runs at a whopping 2,560 x 1,600 and which could allow for tablets capable of photo-quality graphics. The new panel, which has a Retina Display busting pixel density of 498ppi, delivers well in excess of Full HD resolution in a screen smaller than you’d find on, say, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7.

Toshiba 6-inch tablet display offers 498ppi print-quality

It also packs in far more pixels than the Tab 7.7, which had already impressed us back at IFA 2011 with its 1280 x 800 resolution. The Toshiba Mobile Display panel has a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and offers 16.7m colors, covering 61-percent of the NTSC color gamut. Viewing angles are 176-degrees both horizontally and vertically, making it ideal for tablets since they’re usually flipped regularly between portrait and landscape orientation.

While the current model runs in 2D, Toshiba suggests that future iterations could show 3D images instead. One possible implementation could be a high-res glasses-free 3D display; usually, such panels – as found on the Nintendo 3DS – offer low resolutions as they split alternate lines of pixels between each eye, thus halving the number of vertical lines that each eye sees. Toshiba’s new display, however, isn’t short on vertical lines, meaning even if halved it would still be far higher than current compact LCD panels.

Toshiba will show off the new 2,560 x 1,600 display next week, but isn’t saying when the panel might make it into full production. We’d definitely be interested in some super-high resolution tableteering using the screen, however, having seen the print-quality text 498ppi is capable of delivering.

NVIDIA intros bright 3D Vision 2 glasses, 3D LightBoost LCDs

Nvidia is taking the wraps off its 3D Vision refresh, dubbed 3D Vision 2. While the functionality remains identical to the original, the update includes hardware optimizations that address some concerns with the 2.5+ year-old standard. You can check out our full 3D Vision 2 review on Monday morning, complete with performance benchmarks vs. AMD’s competing HD3D product. For now, here are the important points:

This latest version comes with new glasses, new hardware, and some new tech behind enjoying 3D games and Blu-ray movies. Nvidia sees its 3D products as a major success thus far, with half a million 3D Vision kits sold, over 70 compatible products (monitors, laptops, all-in-ones) and a 3D games library with over 550 titles, so a refresh after roughly two years is to be expected.

Because 3D Vision uses active shutter glasses for the 3D effect, a significant amount of light is lost before the picture hits your eyes. The original standard suffers from relatively dark monitor output in conjunction with difficulty seeing through the glasses to see peripherals such as the keyboard. This problem has been successfully addressed with Nvidia 3D LightBoost, a collection of display technologies that include an LED monitor backlight that pulses twice as brightly and increasing the amount of time that the shutter glasses remain open. Nvidia says LightBoost will make 3D Vision 2 roughly 30 percent brighter than its predecessor.

Another major improvement comes with the glasses redesign, with a 20 percent bigger lens aperture. Constructed with softer composite materials, the frame will fit to your face tighter (but not too tight), so less light should bleed in from around the lenses. Nvidia also promises less ghosting and “true 120 Hz” gaming when in 2D mode. The great news is that old and new glasses are cross-compatible, so all 3D Vision glasses will work with any 3D Vision display.

So what about the new products? Nvidia is launching 3D Vision 2 with a new 27-inch Asus monitor, the VG278H. This LED-backlit beast has DVI and HDMI 1.4, an integrated IR emitter, 1920×1080 resolution and comes bundled with the appropriate glasses. Speaking of glasses, the redesigned frames are all wireless (no wired version), and cost $99 (or $149 bundled with an external IR emitter). There’s also a Toshiba laptop, the Qosmio X770/X775, that’s compatible with the new 3D standard.

3D Vision 2 is being launched today during Nvidia’s GeForce LAN 6 in Alameda, CA. If you happen to be in the Bay Area, you should come by the USS Hornet (yeah, it’s on an aircraft carrier) and check out the new 3D goodness. I’ll be there all weekend, playing Battlefield 3 until my fingers bleed. [Editor's Note: Follow Devin on Twitter @devinconnors, he'll try to post updates about the LAN.] And once again, don’t forget to check out our full 3D Vision 2 review on Monday!

Toshiba Satellite L735D Announces Updated Kid-Friendly Laptop

Toshiba and Best Buy worked on this one together, and did quite a bit of research to make sure that the little ones were getting what they wanted. Which was a lot of silver and neon green.

Toshiba Satellite L735D Laptop designed for Kids

The Toshiba Satellite L735D is really just the L635 wrapped up in some kid-friendly design, packed full of kid-friendly software, with more aggressive pricing. It’s a full 13.3-inch laptop, with a 1.3GHz AMD E-series processor and a 320GB hard drive. The 13.3-inch screen has a 1300×708 resolution, and supports video playback in 720p. The L735D also has two USB 2.0 ports, a webcam for video chat, and a battery life of five and a half hours. Obviously, these aren’t specs to drool over, but they make sense considering the rather low price point this little guy is going for.

Toshiba Satellite L735D Is the Ultimate Kids’ Laptop

As far as kid-centric features go, the most obvious (aside from the color scheme) would be the “wipeable” keyboard. Toshiba was very careful to not use the term “spill resistant,” so don’t think you can send little Tommy over to his laptop with a full glass of soda pop. Once he’s finished, however, and made the keyboard sufficiently sticky, feel free to wipe it clean. The Satellite L735D also comes with LEGO Harry Potter: The Video Game pre-installed, as well as KidZui (a browser just for kids).

The Satellite L735D will be available exclusively from Best Buy in the beginning of October, with an MSRP of $497.99.

Toshiba Regza PC D731 series

Toshiba makes TVs, don’t they? Well, it is rather interesting to note that the Japanese company also rolls out computers, and as with many other manufacturers, the all-in-one design is favored, hence the Regza PC D731 series. Toshiba’s effort will come in just one size, that is 23″, but good thing when it comes to processors, you are able to select from a variety such as the Intel Pentium B950 for starters, Core i5-2430M for those who have some work and gaming to be done, or the high end Core i7-2670QM (among the three anyway) processor that has the necessary muscle to crunch numbers while making sure you get the near maximum number of frames per second in the latest FPS title.

Storage-wise, you need not fret as you will be able to choose from up to 2TB of hard drive capacity, with a maximum 8GB of RAM riding on this puppy. Need to burn something on a disc? Be Toshiba’s guest and choose from a Blu-Ray BDXL, BD or DVD Drive.

Each purchase will come with a pair of digital TV tuners, and it does seem as though these will be out in Japan only for the moment (and the foreseeable future).
